Cicero Phrases – Part III

Knowledge, History, Philosophy

If you have a garden and a library, then you have everything you need.

A house without books is like a body without a soul.

Books are the foodstuff of youth.

Continued dedication toward one objective will often outrun intelligence.

Memory dies down… if not exercised.

History is the testimony of the decades, the light of truth, the life of memory, the master of life, the messenger of the past.

A historian’s first duty is to not betray or quiet the truth and not be suspect to partiality or grudges.

Nature does not allow us to know the limits of things.

Philosophy, the guide to life!

To not know what happened before your birth would be the same to you as remaining a child forever.

Philosophy is the mind’s best remedy.

I am unashamed to confess that which I ignore.

Socrates, therefore, was the first to bring down the philosophy from heaven to earth, gave citizenship to the cities, also introducing it into the homes, obligating them to occupy themselves to its life and customs and all of the good and bad things that go along with it.

Nothing perturbs human life so much as the ignorance of good and evil.

There is nothing so absurd that it cannot be said by a philosopher.

Government, Justice

My understanding is that rulers should boil everything down to this one principle: their subjects should be as happy as possible.

Extreme justice is unjust.

Amongst weapons, laws are silenced.

So that we can be free, we are slaves to the laws.

Let arms yield to the robe, the laurel to the tongue.

The national budget should be balanced. Debts should be reduced. The arrogance of authorities should be moderated and put under control. Payments to foreign governments should be reduced if the nation does not wish to go bankrupt. People should, once again, learn to work instead of living on public leashes.

Regarding civil divergences, when good men are worth more than others, citizens should be weighed, not counted.

I prefer the most unjust peace to the most justified of wars.
